Roslyn Presbyterian Church
(Formerly Mt Pisgah Presbyterian)
A Brief Early History
On October 10, 1885, Reverend Isam Wheelis was commissioned by the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church to labor in the Teanaway and Wenatchee valleys. After a thorough exploration of the area, he found it impractical to connect the two valleys under one minister, owing to the distance between the valleys and the high range of hills which are covered with snow until late in the spring.
Reverend Wheelis began his labors in the Teanaway country on October 25, 1885, with the purpose of organizing a Presbyterian Church. A petition was circulated for the new church and signed by 10 people.
On March 28, 1886, after a discourse by Rev. J.A. Laurie, from Matthew 14: 13-21, the Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church was organized with 11 members. With the election of the Elders and Trustees, a joint meeting was held, and a contract was agreed upon with Rev. I. Wheelis becoming their supply pastor for a year term for copy,000 per year.
Services were first held in a school house in the un-incorporated village of Teanaway, in Kittitas County. On March 28, 1887, a meeting of the church was held at a home in Roslyn to draw up articles of incorporation. The 1887 statistics show 14 adults and 31 children in the Sunday school. On October 12, 1887, Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church incorporated.
The church and Sabbath school met in various locations until they could build a new church. A site was purchased for (edit required) from the N.W.I. Company on Idaho and First Streets. Costing $3,840.64 to build, the church had its first meeting March 26, 1900. A beautiful reed organ with ornate pipes was installed during this time. The organ was made in Michigan in the late 1800s and is occasionally played at Sunday worship services. The church building continues to house an active Christian congregation participating in worship, Sunday school, Bible study, and fellowship.
