We are now in Lent. In the church calendar, the year begins before Christmas in the preparatory season called Advent. Then comes Christmas. Next is Epiphany, after the twelve days of Christmas. Then comes some “ordinary time.” And with Ash Wednesday (last Wednesday), comes the time of solemn preparation for Easter that is called Lent.
Lent ends with Good Friday (April 18 this year), two days before Easter (April 20). Christians have used Lent as a time of prayer and disciplines that help us contemplate all that God has done for us through Jesus Christ. It is a good time to begin reading your Bible and praying daily, if you aren’t in the habit. It is a time to especially focus on the love of Jesus Christ.

FOOD BANK
Hello dear friends,
Our church has long contributed to the Food Bank sponsored by Hopesource in Cle Elum. Now we hope to step up our involvement. The first Sunday of each month, and other times as you wish, we will collect food to help support the community. If you bring perishables, e.g. fruit, eggs, bread, etc., please bring those items ONLY on the first Sunday of the month. Non-perishables can be put in the basket at any time. I will be taking our donations to the Food Bank on the first Monday of each month, and other times if the Food Bank basket in the Fellowship Hall overfloweth!
The Food Bank suggests items regularly needed to provide the maximum benefit. However, they will gladly take any item you wish to donate that is consumable.
Items of particular need are:
- Soups and chili Canned meats/tuna Rice and pasta mixes
- Coffee/tea/hot chocolate Juices Condiments/salad dressings
- Pancake/baking mix Syrup/Jam/Jelly 4-5# bags of flour/sugar
- Cooking Oil Cereal hot or cold Powdered/canned milk
- Peanut Butter Canned fruits/veggies* Low-fat or low-salt items
*They DO NOT need canned corn or canned tomatoes.
Perishable items (first Sunday only):
Fresh or frozen fruits and veggies, lettuce, eggs, cheese, bread items, etc.
If you have a garden this summer, they will take your produce/veggie/fruit donations. If you prefer, you can deliver perishables personally at any time they are open. Check for times.
Household items:
- Toilet Paper Baby diapers Zip lock bags – all sizes
- Kleenex Paper towels Aluminum foil
- Household and personal items such as dish soap, laundry soap, bleach, dryer sheets, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. They will take hotel-size personal items also if you travel and save those items.
We have been so blessed and ask that when you are grocery shopping you think of those less fortunate and buy some extra items for the Food Bank. Or, if you are going to Costco or the like, pick up a case of something you could donate.
The Roslyn/Cle Elum community is blessed by our church community in Roslyn. The Catholic Church participates by donating money, the Episcopalian Church collects food, and we continue to collect food and donate to the Food Bank through our budget. The Cle Elum Food Bank primarily serves from Elk Heights to Easton in Upper Kittitas County.
The Food Bank also needs volunteers. So if you are looking for a way to volunteer serving the community and God, please call 509-674-2375 and sign up for at least 2 hours or more a week as you are able. They have various jobs needing our assistance.
Blessings, Karen Moore
Note – this announcement is also attached to the email if you would like to print it out for a list of items needed.
