LITURGY
BIBLE SENTENCE:
Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles
For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy. As it is written, Therefore, I will praise You among the Gentiles, and sing to Your name.” And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.” And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol Him.” And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even He who arises to rule the Gentiles; in Him will the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15: 8-13)
PRAYER:
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
CALL TO WORSHIP:
My heart is steadfast, O God!
I will sing and make melody with all my being!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your steadfast love is great above the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let Your glory be over all the earth!
That Your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by Your right hand and answer me!
This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, gives us success! (Psalm 108:1-6; Psalm 118: 24-25)
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!
We bless you from the house of the LORD. Hosanna!” (Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 118:26)
SONG OF PRAISE:
INVOCATION:
God our Savior, we rejoice in Jesus Christ our Savior and King, Who entered Jerusalem to suffer and to die for us. Let these palms be for us signs of His victory; and grant that we who bear them in His name may ever hail Him as our King, and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
HYMN OF WORSHIP:
CONFESSING OUR SIN TOGETHER:
Most Holy Father, just as the people of Jerusalem, thrilled to shout their Hosannas, speedily turned away in discouragement and loss of faith; so we quickly forsake and abandon our Lord and King. The week goes by and we forget the eternal One who partook of flesh and blood in order to suffer and die in our place. Forgive us and have mercy on us! Renew us as Your covenant people to commit ourselves anew to obedience from hearts that love You; that having been set free from sin, we might live as slaves of righteousness. Amen.
Take a next few moments to silently confess your sins, that you might know cleansing forgiveness, and the joy of restored life in Him.
WORDS OF COMFORT:
“With everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord your Redeemer. “I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake.” (Isaiah 43:25)
SONG OF REDEMPTION:
THE READING OF GOD’S WORD: Luke 19:28-48
The Triumphal Entry
28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
